What is Asbestos?
Asbestos refers to a group of naturally occurring fibrous minerals that
have been used for many years in commercial products. Asbestos has been
used for thousands of years, but didn't become popular until the latter
half of the 1800s. Builders quickly recognized asbestos' fire-retardant
properties, and started using it for insulation and sound absorption.
Asbestos was a widely used building material for decades. It eventually
became clear that the prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibers caused significant
health risks, and the asbestos industry sharply declined. However, asbestos
has still not been completely banned in the U.S. It can be found in most
Bay Area homes and buildings constructed or renovated between the 1950’s
and 1980’s. Asbestos was used for a variety of building materials,
because of its sound absorbency, flexibility, strength, and ability to
resist heat. These materials included:
- Popcorn Ceilings
- Vinyl Sheet Flooring
- Floor Tiles
- Roofing Shingles
- Ducting Insulation
Asbestos Health Risks
Asbestos fibers enter the lungs when inhaled, potentially causing a wide
range of problems. People who work or live in environments with asbestos
have the highest risk of developing the following diseases.
Lung Cancer: Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer there is. As asbestos fibers
accumulate in the lungs, they kill healthy cells and encourage the growth
Mesothelioma: Mesothelioma is a type of cancer strongly associated with asbestos exposure.
Some cases of mesothelioma develop after only a few months of regular exposure.
Asbestosis: Workers who are regularly exposed to asbestos may also develop asbestosis,
a chronic condition that causes considerable lung scarring. Sufferers
may experience shortness of breath or even respiratory failure.
