As recommended by California’s Contractor State License Board and Cal/OSHA, in selecting an abatement contractor, consumers should consider several key factors.
- Does the contractor you are considering have a valid, current contractor’s license as well as a current and valid license bond? You can check ERI’s license information using the Contractors State License Board’s Instant License Check system.

- For asbestos projects, does the contractor have a current and valid Certificate of Registration for Asbestos-related Work through the Division of Occupational Safety and Health? You can check ERI’s registration information using Cal/OSHA’s Asbestos Registrants Database.

- Does the contractor maintain sufficient insurance for environmental remediation work? The policy should be an “Occurrence” liability policy and not a “Claims Made” liability policy. In addition, the policy should not include pollution exclusions. You can request proof of insurance from any contractor directly. You can download ERI’s proof of insurance here.
- Does the contractor have a history of compliance or safety violations/citations with Cal/OSHA or the EPA? Cal/OSHA maintains a compliance history database that is made available to the public via the web. EPA violations may be checked by contacting the local air quality districts directly.
